What Is Tooth Removal?
Tooth extraction may seem extreme, but it is a simple procedure many people experience at least once in their lifetime. When a tooth poses a threat to your oral health or the development of your child's jaw and bite pattern, then it becomes necessary to remove the tooth.
This procedure usually only takes a single visit, where our friendly dental team gently extracts the tooth in question. The results of this treatment usually have immediate and long-term benefits. If you have an infected tooth that requires extraction to prevent the spread of infection, then you experience pain relief after the procedure once the infected tooth is no longer causing problems.
When your little one needs a stubborn milk tooth removed to make room for their adult teeth, the long-term benefits include a healthy and proper bite, as well as improved alignment of their teeth. Older teens and adults may need their wisdom teeth removed because the teeth are impacted. Extracting wisdom teeth prevents infection and can reduce the severity of crowded or crooked teeth.
Do I Need an Extraction?
We understand that many people suffer from dental anxiety, and the thought of having a tooth removed may cause a sense of dread. That is why our team does everything possible to maximize your comfort and create a positive experience.
There are many reasons that you may need to have a tooth removed. If you have a broken tooth that cannot be corrected with a crown, then extraction may be necessary. A decayed tooth cannot be left in place because it jeopardizes your gums and neighboring teeth. If you have an infected tooth that requires root canal therapy, then we will do everything we can to save your natural tooth structure. However, when the structure cannot be saved, then tooth removal is vital.
Wisdom teeth are often removed because you do not have room in your dental arches for the final molars. They cannot be left because they can become infected or even push your other teeth out of alignment.
Extraction may also be a required pretreatment for other dental services. If you're receiving partial or full dentures, then we may need to extract compromised teeth to make room for the restorations or prepare for a dental implant procedure.
Our Extraction Process
The moment you step into our practice, you know that you are a priority. From our receptionist to our dental team, we welcome you like family and treat you with the care and respect you deserve.
We begin with a thorough exam of your teeth, jaws, and gums and take detailed images with our CBCT scanner. Our team will share the details of the exam with you and take the time to talk with you and listen carefully to fully understand your needs and concerns. Next, we will craft a treatment plan that is customized to fit you and your lifestyle.
Our team is passionate about creating a great experience, no matter what treatment you need. That is why we offer sedation options to safeguard your comfort and boost your peace of mind. We provide nitrous oxide for kids and offer oral sedation or a combination of nitrous oxide and oral sedation for teens and adults. We will discuss the effects of our sedation options so you are empowered to select the one that is right for you.
Once you feel comfortable and the area around the tooth has been numbed, our dentist will gently extract the tooth and place gauze over the socket to protect the area. We may also perform extraction as part of a larger procedure, such as same-day bone grafts, ridge preservation, socket preservation, or for same-day dentures.
As part of the treatment, our friendly team will also provide instructions and tips to help you through the recovery process.
